The Department of Traditional Music staged a Balinese Gamelan performance at the Lotus Pond Stage on September 27.
The performance, which presented the achievements of a Balinese Gamelan master class, featured guest instructors, Dr. I Gusti Putu Sudarta and Ni Putu Hartini, plus a group of TNUA students.
“Sunar Suci: Shining Light for Piano and Bali Gamelan Angklung,” and “TNUA for Bali Gamelan Angklung,” are written by Taiwanese composer Hin-Iat Liu. The latter of the two made its world premiere at the September 27 concert.
Dr. I Gusti Putu Sudarta was the dancer for “Baris Tunggal.”
Prof. Hsiu Jen Jian, chairperson of the Department of Traditional Music, noted that TNUA offered its first Gamelan course in 1985. At the time, Prof. Ma Shui-long, then chairman of the Department of Music, introduced the course in order to widen the scope of learning for students, and his department bought a set of Gamelan instruments – the first ever bought by any schools in Taiwan. In 1993, TNUA bought its second set of Gamelan instruments.
