French violinist Gerard Poulet gave a master class at TNUA on October 2. Prof. Poulet last visited TNUA seven years ago.
Prof. Poulet gave one-on-one instructions to two students during the master class held at the TNUA Concert Hall. He also performed Richard Strauss’ “Violin Sonata, and Debussy’s “Violin Sonata in G Minor,” and played Shostakovich’s “Five Pieces for 2 Violins and Piano” together with Prof. Shien-Ta Su.
Prof. Poulet also performed with the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert on October 5.
The son of conductor Gaston Poulet, the 85-year-old Prof. Poulet started studying the violin at age five. He entered the Conservatoire de Paris in Andre Asselin’s class at the age of 11 and was awarded first prize in violin at age 12. In the same year, he performed with Orchestre Colonne conducted by his father. In 1956, he won the 1st Grand Prix of the Paganini Competition in Genoa.
Poulet was professor and later honorary professor at the Conservatoire de Paris. He was also a professor at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris and at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
