TSMC Education & Culture Foundation, National Symphony Orchestra and TNUA have jointly introduced a musical educational program.

The program, aiming to lay a firm foundation for Taiwan’s classical music scene, will feature two maestros: former NSO Music Director Shao-Chia Lu and incumbent NSO Music Director Jun Markl.

The program was unveiled at a July 4 press conference, which both Prof. Lu and Mr. Markl attended along with TSMC Education & Culture Foundation’s Chief Executive Victor Hsu, NSO Executive Director Wen-Chen Kuo, Prof. Shien-Ta Su, dean of School of Music, Prof. Lu Wen-Yea, chairperson of the Department of Music, and Prof. Wu Shih-San.

Mr. Hsu noted that his foundation has been working with NSO, and he believes this music educational program will continue for a long time to come, setting a successful model.

Mr. Markl said that in order to increase Taiwan’s visibility in the international music scene, the most important way is to let the world frequently see music composers and conductors from Taiwan.

Therefore, the “One-minute Symphony Composing Project” under the educational program is a platform for young composers with the aim of turning their creations into works to be presented in concerts.

A “conductor project” under the educational program will see Prof. Lu offer courses at TNUA in the coming school year. Prof. Lu has been teaching at TNUA since September 2020.

A concert has been scheduled for November 5 at TNUA to present the achievements of the students in Prof. Lu’s maestro conducting class.

Prof. Su said TNUA’s School of Music is honored to have the support from NOS, Prof. Lu and the TSMC foundation, allowing music education to continue.
