The Department of New Media staged an opening ceremony jointly with the School of Music on the night of October 19 for the 2024 Kuan Du Light Art Festival.

Almost 70 teachers and students from the Department of Music and the Department of Traditional Music were featured in a transdisciplinary exhibition/performance at the Center for Art and Technology.

Dean of the School of Music Prof. Lu Wen-Yea, Dean of the School of Film and New Media Prof. Jack Shih, Chairperson of the Department of Music Prof. Wu Shih-San, Chairman of the Department of New Media Prof. Fu-Jui Wang, joined many others in attending the ceremony.

The theme of this year’s festival is “sau-siann,” which shows a kind of imagination associated with broken, incomplete, trembling light and shade and sound, which symbolizes an energy transformation from materiality to heat and light; meanwhile, it displays a state of music performance being interrupted and broke.

In Taiwanese Southern Min language, “sau-siann” means the throat is hurt or husky sound. This kind of croaky voice seems to express the experience of being repressed and disrupted. Through these multiple meanings, the exhibition aims to explore the aesthetic of energy transformation and destructiveness. Moreover, it combined with shimmering light, quavering sound and interactive installations, creating an artistic space filled with dynamic force and tension.
