TNUA’s Department of New Media Art took part in the 2023 Ars Electronica Festival, presenting its “Epicentrum” exhibition.

“Epicentrum” highlighted Taiwan’s special location amid a tense global situation and geologically at the intersection of tectonic plates.

The exhibition showcased Taiwan’s new media art on an international stage and enabled closer ties and exchange between Taiwan and the rest of the world.

Founded in 1979, the Ars Electronica Festival is one the best-known events globally for electronic arts. The annual festival’s “Campus” project invites top arts universities around the world to take part every year. This year, TNUA was represented as Featured University of the Festival, which ran from September 6 to 10 at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria.

“Epicentrum” was jointly curated by Prof. Jia-Ming Day, chairman of the Department or New Media Art, Lien-Cheng Wang and Lin Yen-Ju.

“Epicentrum” sought to reveal how organic and inorganic matter are interwoven and set in motion. Through the lens of media art, the exhibition explored how Taiwan is becoming a node where vibrations occur. Amidst a tense global situation, Taiwan is proving to be an epicentrum of oscillations. Geologically located at the convergence of tectonic plates, its unique historical and geopolitical complexity has made it a contested territory. Identity, sovereignty, and the future of democracy pose ongoing challenges.

Participating artists included: 2ENTER ( Cheng-Wei Chen, Chieh-Yi Chui, En-Chi Chuang, Ji-Rong Liou), Anchi Lin (Ciwas Tahos), Chang-En Ding, Cheng-Hao Tsai, Chih-Yang Chen, Chu-Hsun Hsieh, Hsin-Yu Chang, Kun-Han Ho, Ssu-Chi Hou, Tso-Yu Chiang, Yueh-Jie Chen, Yun-Jieh Wu, and Zhe-Zhi Lin. New Media Art faculty included: Chun-Chi Lin, Der-Lor Way, Fujui Wang, Goang-Ming Yuan, Jia-Ming Day, Lien-Cheng Wang, Jun-Jieh Wang, Shih-Wei Sun, Shu-Yu Lin and Yu-Hsiung Huang.
Audio-visual artists Hsin-Yu Chang, Ting-Hao Yeh and Tsung-Yun Lai also took part.
