A panel discussion was held on November 12 to revisit “Circuit Garden,” the opening program of TNUA’s Center for Art and Technology.

The discussion, moderated by independent producer Sun Ping, featured key figures behind the creation of “Circuit Garden” that was presented in late October to mark the opening of the Center for Art and Technology: the program’s artistic director, Jun-Jieh Wang, who is currently the director of Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM); the co-directors of “Circuit Garden” Chia-Ming Wang and Huei-Ming Chang; its composer Chen Chia-Hui; and LuxuryLogico founder Kun-Ying Lin.

Mr. Chia-Ming Wang noted that “Circuit Garden” was meant to allow the audience to sense the space and aura of the center through the control of time. It was a ritualistic presentation inspired by Taoist rituals, said Mr. Wang, who thinks rituals are symbolic behaviors seeking balance among nature and people.

Mr. Jun-Jieh Wang said the Center for Art and Technology breaks all limitations typical of other exhibition and performance spaces. It is neither a traditional fine arts museum nor a theatre, said the TFAM director. The special designs of the center enable possibilities for future exhibitions and performances, he said. “Circuit Garden” offered a brand new experience by using the entire center as its stage and exhibition space.

Mr. Huei-Ming Chang and Mr. Chia-Ming Wang are from different backgrounds. But Mr. Chang described his co-direction with Mr. Wang as an “organic” collaboration, during which everyone was open-minded, hoping to have one’s ideas incorporated into others’. The work had a vitality that allowed it to grow by itself.

Mr. Chen Chia-Hui pointed out that the show’s acoustic design was a challenge because of the differences in the various spaces of the center.

Mr. Kun-Ying Lin said that the work was a demonstration of “ecological” possibilities, showing how frameworks could be cast away in future exhibitions and performances.

The installations of “Circuit Garden” will continue to be on display at the Center of Art and Technology until December 10. Admission is free.
