TNUA’s School of Dance has geared up exchange activities with the Za-Koenji Public Theatre in Tokyo.

Exchange between the two sides had had to be held online since 2020 because of the COVID pandemic. But physical activities officially started in February this year with choreographer Keiko Takeya leading a team from Japan to take part in workshops and stage a performance at TNUA.

In early April, Prof. Ho Hsiao-mei, Dean of the School of Dance, led a TNUA delegation to Japan. Students from TNUA and Japan staged a dance performance at the Za-Koenji Public Theatre. The Japanese performers were from three groups that won awards on the School of Dance’s competition platform.

Prof. Ho said the School of Dance established a competition platform encouraging students to create dances.

Prof. Ho said that dance is an art that needs to be experienced in person in order to fully convey its energy. Since COVID controls were lifted, TNUA and Za-Koenji Public Theatre have stepped up the pace of their exchange.

Keiko Takeya said she and her team members were deeply impressed by TNUA’s facilities, professionalism, and teaching style during their visit in February.

The Za-Koenji Public Theatre was converted from a community center by renowned architect Toyo Ito in 2009.
