Cloud Gate founder Prof. Lin Hwai-min lamented dance critic Diane Baker’s untimely death in 2021 by writing:

“As Taiwanese broadsheets abandon dance criticism, it is astonishing that a US reporter became the most prolific and widely published commentator of dance.”

The US journalist had been living in Taiwan and observing its development of dance for years. Her family has set up a scholarship for dance students in order to continue her legacy.

The School of Dance recently invited members of Baker’s family (Cynthia, Sharon and John) and her close friend Peter Dernbach to TNUA. A performance was staged by six students who had received the scholarship. A seat in the Dance Theater has been named after Ms. Diane Baker in recognition of her contribution.

The guests were emotional for being able to revisit some of the places that she had set foot on. They were also touched by her commitment to a career of documenting the development of dance in Taiwan.

The School of Dance is grateful to Ms. Baker’s family.
