The Department of Music arranged two master classes on March 20, given by vocal coach Joel Ayau from the New England Conservatory, and pianist Ilya Rashkovskiy, respectively to students of the voice and piano programs.

Dr. Ayau, who teaches at the New England Conservatory’s College of Opera Studies and College of Collaborative Piano, is a pianist, conductor, teacher and coach whose broad musical career spans a wide range of genres, venues and musical styles. He has worked with Renee Fleming, Andrea Bocelli, George Shirley, Frederica von Stade and others.

 
A graduate of the Cafritz Young Artist Program of the Washington National Opera, Dr. Ayau, who also speaks French, Italian, German, Russian and Chinese, has assisted on productions at WNO, and worked on the music staffs of North Carolina Opera, Portland Opera, Opera Omaha, Wolf Trap Opera, and Aspen Opera Theatre and VocalARTS.
 
Russian pianist Ilya Rashkovskiy’s master class was sponsored by the Powerchip Cultural Foundation. Prof. Rashkovskiy has given master classes in Hong Kong, New Zealand and France, and currently teaches at Korea’s Sungshin Women’s University.
 
Prof. Rashkovskiy has performed in many important concert venues and at various music festivals around the world. He has collaborated with many musicians, including violinist Park Ji-yoon, violinist Valeriy Sokolov, mezzo-soprano Brigitte Balleys and soprano Orianne Moretti. He was in Taiwan this time round mainly performing as the accompanist for Japanese violinist Akiko Suwanai’s solo recital.
