Vice President Lai Ching-te visited TNUA on October 10, the National Day. The main purpose of his visit was to see the newly completed Center for Art and Technology.

Accompanied by TNUA President Prof. Chen Kai-huang, Lai also visited the 10th International Exhibition of Architecture Graduation Design (IEAGD), jointly organized by TNUA, Shih Chien University, and the Chinese Institute of Urban Design.

Vice President Lai said that when he was mayor of Tainan, he had frequent interactions with TNUA. And this visit allowed him to have more understanding of the richness and diversities of the university and witness the strong “soft power” of Taiwan in the field of art teaching, exhibition and research.

Prof. Chen said that after eight years of planning during the stints of three TNUA presidents, the Center for Art and Technology will be the first venue in Taiwan dedicated to cross-discipline exhibitions/performances, technology R&D, and innovations after its formal opening. The most distinctive feature of the building is that the entire building is suspended by steel beams, visually appearing to float in the air. The Center for Art and Technology is six meters above ground, integrated into the mountains and forests of the campus. Standing beneath the building one can have a good view of the Kuandu Plain and Taipei 101.

Prof. Chen explained the center will serve as a venue for teaching, performance, research, and art experiments, and will also combine art with technologies such as big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, with the goal of developing into a national center for technology and art performance and research.

This center has five floors above ground and one below, with total floor space of approximately 7,825 square meters. Facilities include a lecture hall, a refreshment area, an observation deck, exhibition spaces, laboratories and studios.

Another highlight of Vice President Lai’s visit was IEAGD, the first event held at the Center for Art and Technology. IEAGD features works by architecture students from Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Lai remarked that each piece of work in this exhibition is the result of the participant’s dedication and ingenuity, including the integration of geography, culture, social issues, local creativity and other diverse perspectives, transformed into a piece of innovative work.

Vice President Lai noted that this exhibition also provides a platform for students to showcase their learning achievements and expand their international horizons.
IEAGD, which has entered its 10th year, is a showcase of young architects who are looking back at their own experiences and local experiences, and who are imagining the future of global vision with a local perspective. The exhibition is open until October 31.
