German film director and producer Marco Wilms conducted a two-day workshop at TNUA in March, an activity jointly arranged by the university’s Center for Art and Technology and the Goethe-Institut Taipei.
He discussed his work “Art War,” explaining how he finished the documentary alone, as well as his “guerilla” filming style.
Mr. Wilms was born in East Berlin in 1966. He is currently director and producer of the Berlin-based HELDENFILM production company.
Apart from “Art War,” his other documentary films include “Tailor Made Dreams” and “Comrade Couture.” He has also produced TV programs and series for TV stations such as ARTE ZDF, MDR, NDR, TV Ontario and France 5.
“Comrade Couture” premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2009, and it was also screened at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival that year.
“Art War” has won many awards at film festivals, including: the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) in Montreal; DOK Leipzig; the International Festival of Audiovisual Programs (FIPA); and the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneva.
“Art War” is about how young artists, writers and musicians used their art to support the revolution as Arab Spring unfolded from 2010 to 2013.
Mr. Wilms noted that artists not only create art of their own era, but also link up ancient cultures. He stressed art is a weapon that can be used to fight injustice, and to defend democracy and culture.
