Students from the International Master of Arts Program in Cultural and Creative Industries (IMCCI) held an exhibition at the International Exchange Center on January 9.
"Matryoshka: Exhibiting within the Exhibition" attracted many visitors, including: Paraguay's ambassador to the ROC, Mr. Marcial Bobadilla Guillen; and the representative of South Africa's liaison office in Taipei, Mr. Musawenkosi Aphane and his wife.
The students chose "Matryoshka" – a popular Russian symbol that refers to a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size, one contained within the next one – as the theme of their exhibition to underscore the fact that several ideas from each of the international students were gathered to create an exhibition of "exhibition proposals."
Its purpose was to present alternative exhibition models, rethinking core curatorial concepts as well as the physicality of the exhibiting space, and confronting contemporary social issues. It also created connections between different spheres such as university students, scholars, artists, gallery owners, and other stakeholders, providing a context where art could be discussed.
The exhibition displayed a variety of proposals, such as "The Facebook Insight" that examined virtual identity in social media, and "Voices of Void" that aimed to raise awareness of dog shelters' conditions in Taiwan.
"Matryoshka" also hosted its own PechaKucha-style session where guest speakers from the local art community briefly introduced their work.
