The Endellion String Quartet from Britain and Bulgarian pianist Plamena Mangova gave master classes separately at TNUA in November. During the classes, they demonstrated their art and also gave one-on-one instructions to students.
Endellion was founded in 1979. They have been undertaking Cambridge University Residency since 1992. Its members are violinists Andrew Watkinson and Ralph de Souza, violist Garfield Jackson and cellist David Waterman.
The 2000 edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians described Endellion as "arguably the finest quartet in Britain, playing with poise, true intonation, excellent balance and a beautiful tone. In music of the Viennese Classical composers it has few challengers but it has won praise in a wide repertory, its Beethoven and Bartok cycles being especially admired."
The quartet has performed in many places in the world, and received a lot of plaudits.
Apart from the master class, the Endellion musicians also staged a concert at TNUA, performing pieces by Haydn and Debussy.
In her master class, Ms. Mangova showed students how to interpret and play Chopin’s music.
Ms. Mangova won the XIV Paloma O'Shea Competition's third prize at the age of 18. In 2007, she was runner-up at the XVI Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium.
Ms. Mangova has been an active concert pianist, having performed with many of the world's renowned orchestras, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Belgium, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
