The SKY-2011 Asia Plate & Print Exhibition running from October 5 to December 18 at the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts features works by over 150 print artists from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Tailand, China, Hong Kong and Macau.
The juxtaposition of the plates and prints in one exhibition is meant to highlight the relationships between them. The exhibition is not only showcasing the cultural characteristics of the print artists from different cultural backgrounds, but also engaging them in a dialogue, breaking the international and cultural barriers.
This is the first time such exhibitions have been organized in Asia, and all exhibits will be donated to TNUA after the exhibition, serving as important research materials for future studies on Asia’s modern print art.
Apart from the displayed objects, there will be other activities to go with the exhibition, such as lectures and print-making courses.
Artist-in-residence:
Prof. Irene Chan from Maryland
Prof. Irene Chan from the University of Maryland concluded her two-month stint as artist-in-residence by arranging an exhibition of the works she created during her stay at TNUA on October 5.
The versatile print, book and installation artist arrived at TNUA in August for site-specific art activity, as well as giving workshops and talks. She taught volunteers how they could make paper from fruit peels, and showed students from the Department of Fine Arts how to make tunnel books.
Prof. Chan said her artist-in-residence project this time was based on themes related to the American cultural issues with which she grew up. She explained that her works are mostly results of her daily observation of nature, such as the process of growth to decay, or things with temporary existence.
A visual art professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, USA, she also runs her own Ch’An Press for print art publications. So far she has published 29 titles of limited edition art books. She has served as artist-in-residence in many other places.
