TNUA is marking the 90th birthday of the late Yao Yi-wei by staging the late drama master’s play “Sun Fei-hu: The Snatcher of Wedding,” in a cross-strait co-production with the National Theatre of China (NTC).
The play, which has never been staged since it was written in 1965, will be premiered at the National Theater in Taipei on April 6, and will then meet the audiences in China in May.
TNUA is responsible for producing the play, with Prof. Chang Huei-teng put in charge of the actual production work. The director is Wu Xiaojiang from NTC.
Members of the production team also include top theatre figures from both Taiwan and China, such as costume designer Prof. Liu Xinglin from China’s Central Academy of Drama and lighting expert Prof. Chien Lee-Zen from TNUA.
The cast features excellent actors and actresses also from both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Ms. Huang Pi-twan, artistic director of the National Theatre and Concert Hall (NTCH), at a press conference held in Taipei on March 12 to announce the production, noted that“Sun Fei-hu: The Snatcher of Wedding” is considered by some critics as the highest achievement of the late master Yao.
She also thanked TNUA President Prof. Ju, Tzong-ching for his full support that materialized the cross-strait co-production.
Mr. Liu Tiegang, a producer from NTC, told the press conference that two and half years of hard work is finally paying off with a presentation of a classic of Yao’s to lovers of his art in both Taiwan and China.
He said he looks forward to more and closer cooperation with TNUA and NTCH in the future.
Prof. Ju expressed gratitude to NTCH and NTC. He stressed that the cross-strait co-production will be an unforgettable experience for all that has been involved.
