Prof. Ranko Markovic, artistic director of Konservatorium Wien University, gave a lecture at TNUA on October 22, providing insights into the styles of Johannes Brahms, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and the links between these composers.
Prof. Markovic's recent research has been devoted to the music of Viennese school composers of the late 19th century and early 20th century periods and establishing the relations between them.
During his talk, he played several works from these composers to illustrate the influences and differences between them.
Prof. Markovic also attended the “Global Forum for the Presidents of Universities of the Arts,” hosted by TNUA from October 19 to 20 with participants from 26 universities and institutions from all over the world. He took part in a discussion session on the management of arts universities.
He was also impressed by other activities marking TNUA's 30th anniversary, as well as the university's achievements in running all kinds of exhibitions, concerts and stage productions.
A pianist and educator, Prof. Markovic was born in Zagreb in 1957 and has been living in Austria since 1969. After graduation from the Hochschule Mozarteum in Salzburg, he undertook further studies in Moscow (Tschaikowsky-Conservatory), Budapest (Liszt-Academy) and in London.
His postings included a professorship at the Bruckner-Konservatorium Linz and teaching assignments at the Hochschule für Musik Wien. He has held lectures and conducted workshops throughout the world.
Prof. Markovic was director of the City of Vienna Music Educational Institutions from 1999 till 2004. He has been assigned Prof.h.c. at the National Music Academy in Astana/Kazakhstan and in 2010 he was decorated the Gold Award with Honor for Services to the Federal State of Vienna.
