TNUA conferred honorary doctorates on film director Lee Hsing, set designer Nieh Kuang-Yen, Taiwanese Opera actress Liao Chiung-Chih and print artist Wu Hao at a ceremony on October 18, during which awards were also given to more than a dozen distinguished alumni.
The ceremony was held in a month that marked the university's 30th anniversary. TNUA President Prof. Ju, Tzong-Ching told the ceremony that 30 years may not be long for a university, but for TNUA it is an important moment for it to look back at its past and look forward to its future.
He noted that five outstanding artists were selected to receive the honorary doctorates this year, and 18 others the outstanding alumni awards in recognition of their contributions to society, as well as to TNUA and art.
Famous dancer Ross Parkes, one of the five recipients of the honorary doctorates, was unable to attend the ceremony to receive the honor in person.
Mr. Lee said has been in the film industry for more than 50 years. Although he no longer makes movies, he said, he will continue to play an active role in promoting film exchange between Taiwan and China.
Mr. Nieh said set design may be only a small part of theatre art, but he will remain committed to the work and keep learning.
Ms. Liao said that all along her career she has received much encouragement and support from many teachers, which has given her a chance to continue the heritage of Taiwanese Opera.
Mr. Wu said the honorary doctorate from TNUA is the greatest honor he has ever received in his life.
