On June 14, the TNUA Foreign Students Association, under the guidance of the Office of International Affairs, led international students on an immersive cultural excursion to Jinshan, a coastal town in northern Taiwan known for its rich maritime traditions. The highlight of the trip was a rare, firsthand encounter with “Bong Fire Fishing” (蹦火仔)—a spectacular and historically significant fishing practice unique to Taiwan.
Also known as sulfuric fire fishing or hia-á-tsûn (桸仔船) in the local dialect, this technique involves igniting sulfur to produce flames and sounds, earning its name from the loud “bong” noise heard when the fire bursts to life. Practiced exclusively in Jinshan, this traditional night-time fishing method attracts fish to the surface using intense light from ignited sulfur stones.
The one-day program offered students a richly layered experience that blended onshore cultural education with hands-on activities offshore. The itinerary included A guided walking tour of Huanggang Fishing Village, where students explored the daily lives of traditional fishermen and the historical development of the local maritime culture.
An expert introduction to the century-old sulfuric fire fishing technique, highlighting its ecological significance, cultural symbolism, and continued relevance in Taiwan, followed by A live fire ignition experience, where students witnessed the moment sulfur was lit with a booming spark. This awe-inspiring moment encapsulated the power and drama of this practice.
A sea fishing session, offering students a chance to fish aboard traditional boats and appreciate the natural beauty of the northern coastline.
This cultural exchange not only introduced students to a uniquely Taiwanese heritage but also deepened their engagement with local communities and each other. Through this vibrant journey, students from around the world experienced the beauty of Taiwan’s traditions, broadened their cultural horizons, and strengthened their connections within the TNUA international community.
