TNUA’s Graduate Institute of Museum Studies (GIMS) has signed an MoU with the National Taiwan University (NTU) Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Both sides seek to strengthen exchange and collaboration in cross-disciplinary teaching and research.

One of the major goals of the partnership is to help train management personnel and organize collections, exhibitions, and other activities for the upcoming NTU Engineering Studies Museum.

The MoU was signed on July 3 by Prof. Pei-Chun Lin, Chair of the NTU Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the TNUA Graduate Institute of Museum Studies Chair Dr. Jan-Yen Huang.

Prof. Lin said that as his department is moving to a new building, it is planning to turn the old department building into a museum showcasing the long history of the department. He said it is also hoped the museum can promote public education concerning engineering and science.

Dr. Huang said that NTU’s series of museum plans has caught the attention of all those engaged in museum studies in Taiwan. She said these museums will not only showcase the histories of respective departments and their historic buildings, but also reinforce the sense of belonging and professionalism of all those affiliated with the departments.

She said the NTU Engineering Studies Museum project is the most challenging and ambitious of all in the NTU museum series.

The old NTU Department of Mechanical Engineering building was built in 1943, and on June 23, 2015 was designated a historic architectural site of Taipei City. In November 2022, the department approved a plan to set up a preparation committee for the establishment of the museum and employed Dr. Huang and Prof. Sung-Shang Wang as their advisers.
